How cat years work
Cats don't age at a steady seven years per year. They grow up quickly: the first year counts as about 15 human years, and by their second birthday cats are roughly like a 24-year-old person. After that, each year adds about 4 human years. That's the chart vets commonly use, and the one this calculator follows.
Life stages
The 2021 feline life stage guidelines from the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) group a cat's life into four stages:
- Kitten: under 1 year.
- Young adult: 1 to 6 years.
- Mature adult: 7 to 10 years.
- Senior: over 10 years.
Stages matter more than exact numbers: they're how vets decide on check-ups and screening as cats get older.
