Age at death from two dates
The calculator counts from the date of birth to the date of death: full years, then full months, then the days left over, plus the total number of days.
Example: born March 10, 1808, died June 15, 1880: 72 years, 3 months, 5 days, or 26,395 days.
A birth date from a gravestone
Many headstones and death records give the age at death instead of the date of birth, as in “aged 72 years, 3 months and 5 days”. Choose Birth date from age, enter the date of death and that age, and the calculator works backwards to the date of birth.
Treat the result as “on or about”. Ages on old records were often worked out by hand with 30-day months, so the true date can be a day or two away. A birth or baptism record is the best way to confirm it. The What Day Was I Born? page shows the weekday of any date.
Old calendars
Britain and its colonies switched from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar in September 1752; most of Catholic Europe switched in 1582, and some countries much later. Dates recorded before the switch can be 6 to 13 days off from the Gregorian dates used here, depending on the century and the country, and in Britain the year sometimes started on March 25. The calculator flags dates before 1752 so you can check the source.
